The positive effects of natural healing sources were already known in ancient times. A boom in the spa industry occurred in the 18th century, when the spa towns became centres of cultural and spiritual life, where society’s elite, aristocrats and important people in the political and cultural scene would meet up. Balls were held here, concerts, theatre performances and business and political meetings would take place. Going to the spas was a necessity and sign of social prestige. In the Czech Republic, these places above all included the West Bohemian spas – Františkovy Lázně, Mariánské Lázně and Karlovy Vary, which even tsar Peter the Great visited at the start of the 18th century, thus contributing towards its development.

However, several spa towns sprung up in the period of the 18th – 20th century, so nowadays the Czech Republic is a spa superpower and you can basically find spas in every region. Apart from traditional therapeutic procedures, they also offer recreational and wellness stays, weekend relaxation stays, anti-stress stays for managers or beauty weekends for women, including sports facilities and cultural events.
