Händel? Haydn? Mozart!
In 2009, the whole of the cultural world will be commemorating the 250th anniversary of the death of one of the most famous composers in the world, George Friedrich Handel and also the 200th anniversary of the death of the first of the three Viennese greats, Joseph Haydn. We will also be commemorating their church compositions at St. Nicholas’. But however much music lovers appreciate both of these composers, it would be hard for anyone to outshine the imaginativeness, splendour, brilliance and also depth of the works of that favourite of the audiences in Prague, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart and Prague, Prague and Mozart – these two names will now forever be uttered in the same breath since the memorable production in Prague of the Marriage of Figaro and the memorable premiere in Prague of Don Giovanni (and we could continue with a long list of events at which the place of honour will always be reserved for our taking our leave from the late master at St. Nicholas’).
If you attend one of the concerts in our great cycle in 2009, you may well hear the music of George Friedrich Handel and possibly the music of Joseph Haydn, but you will almost certainly hear works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. And you most certainly cannot allow yourself to miss that.
